Round 10
Brands Hatch, Sunday August 31st, 17 Laps

Webb's wonderful.

Barry Webb scored a superb victory in the tenth round of the MG XPOWER Clubmans Cup at Brands Hatch on Sunday (31 August). Webb fended arch rival Matthew Slinn in the championship that enjoys support from Powertrain Ltd and Ricardo Plc.
For Webb it was a perfect day as he took pole, the race win and fastest lap. He was also thrilled to have beaten Slinn for the first time in a straight fight! But it was never easy for Webb, and little more than a second split them as they sprinted over the line at the end of 17 laps.
The 23-car grid included Howard Payne, back for the first time since his major accident at Oulton Park in June. His rebuilt Mallock Mk20B was as immaculate as ever, and he duly finished well in eighth place.
However, it was Webb at the top of the race having claimed pole in qualifying. Less than a tenth of a second slower than Webb was Swedish visitor Stefan Mumm in his Mallock Mk28/30, while James Lindley (Mallock 29H) and Slinn (Mallock Mk30EBX) formed the second row of the grid. Less than a second covered the top seven cars, while less than two seconds covered the top 17!
Webb set the foundation for his victory by getting the drop on the pack to lead into Paddock Hill Bend. Mumm, meanwhile, had a poor couple of first corners and was quickly edged down the order by Slinn. Now Slinn started a relentless attack on Webb, but with overtaking so difficult on the Brands Indy track, and the cars so evenly matched, Webb was able to stay ahead.
Mumm and Lindley led the chase of the leading duo, while Mike Luck slotted into a secure fifth in his Dart S16. However, behind Luck things were far from settled as a great gaggle of cars battled mightily. Adrian Lester eventually took sixth in the latest Mallock Mk35K, but with 10 cars covered by 10 seconds at the flag, the places were always in doubt.
